As it was Thanksgiving last week in the US – I reflected on being thankful and how to be thankful about the small things.

Celebrating the small things… This year has been taxing as we have been limited in what we can do, where we can go and who we can see…

So what are the small things you can celebrate daily?

I don’t believe we have to wait once a year to be thankful. It should happen every day.

From getting dressed ( yes, I think in lockdown some days it can be an achievement!) to remembering to put the dishwasher on or crossing at least one thing off of your to-do list. Or maybe it is something totally different… It is up to you really.

Why does gratitude matter?

Practising gratitude and noticing the good in your life actually help you feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships (Source: Harvard Medical school).

How to start a gratitude practice in your life?

People have different way to do it so here are a few thoughts starters for you:

  • Notice what is around you in your life – Nature, people you love, work colleagues…
  • Make it a daily practice: whether it is writing down when you leave work what were the good things today, or starting a daily writing practice as you go to bed and noting 3 things you are grateful for and want to celebrate that day.
  • When you wake-up, remind yourself what you were celebrating or grateful for the day before as this will help start your day on a positive note.

Do it every day – but don’t beat your yourself up if you forget. You are Human and that is worth celebrating!

To you!
