What are your 3 words for the year?

by | Feb 7, 2025 | Leadership, Mindset

I have never been good at keeping resolutions (especially the ones relating to my chocolate intake!). Joking aside the level of rigidity of resolutions and maybe the fact they almost feel like they are expected at the beginning of each year has never helped me.

So I wanted to try something different – and I had the opportunity to do so as part of a business coaching group I am part of.

How to go about choosing the 3 words?

  1. Be intentional – and focus on what truly matters for you this year
  2. Think about something that can carry you through ups and downs
  3. Think beyond limitations – a word that signals openness or broadening your opportunities

These words can then serve as a personal mantra, a decision-making filter, motivation during difficult times and reminders of your core intentions.

More tips for selecting your words:

  • Choose words that resonate emotionally
  • Ensure they reflect your current aspirations and what you want to do this year
  • Make them actionable and inspiring

What makes this better than traditional resolutions or goal setting?

  • It brings Flexibility: where goals can be rigid and binary ( achieved or not), 3 words provide a more dynamic and adaptable framework for decision making. It creates a mindset rather than a specific outcome.
  • Holistic Approach: where traditional goal setting often focuses on specific achievements, 3-word guide provides a broader life dimension including personal growth, relationships, and mindset.
  • Psychological Benefits: it is less pressure than detailed goals, it inspires continuous alignment and serves as motivational compass.
  • Easier implementation: it is memorable and quick to recall, can be applied across work and life contexts and can help act as more intuitive decision filters

It is not too late to review what you are planning for the year, the energy you want to bring to what you do and what can carry you throughout the year.
